Monroeville plans to buy emergency sirens alone
After electing not to participate in the county’s plan to buy emergency sirens, the City of Monroeville is developing its own plan to buy them.
At last Tuesday’s council meeting at city hall, Councilman John Rice said the city has been “kicked around a little” in the press and by some citizens who think the city should have participated in the county’s plan to purchase emergency sirens. MORE
 
Witness intimidation alleged
A woman who allegedly threatened a witness is now facing her own set of felony charges, Monroeville Police Chief Rudolph Munnerlyn said.
Tonya Johnson, 34, of Monroeville was arrested last Wednesday after a witness set to testify in a case not involving Johnson complained that Johnson had threatened her, Munnerlyn said. MORE
 
Dealing with the heat
After seeing some record setting temperatures the last two weeks in Monroe County and most citizens are expected to see slightly cooler temperatures this weekend.
Local weather officials are also keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Dean in the Atlantic Ocean.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the high temperature for southwest Alabama was expected to be around 100 degrees during the day and 76 degrees at night with 30 percent humidity and chance of isolated thunderstorms.

BHS to play Linden Aug. 24
J.U. Blacksher High School’s football team has scheduled a preseason scrimmage with Linden High School for Friday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. at Uriah.
Blacksher’s Bulldogs are coming off a 9-1 season that included a forfeit from region-rival Frisco City. After going undefeated, 10-0, the FC Whippets had to forfeit eight games last season for using an ineligible player. MORE
 
3 indicted on drug charges
Three Monroeville men arrested earlier this year by the 35th Judicial Drug Task Force have been indicted on federal drug charges, according to court records.
Jerral Armstrong, 24, and Jeremy Knight, 28, were both arrested when agents served a search warrant at a residence on Jeanine Street in Monroeville April 19. MORE
 
44 doctors oppose CW landfill
Forty-four doctors from three counties signed petitions opposing the proposed landfill near Repton citing possible health risks associated with the facility and those petitions were submitted to the Conecuh County Commission Monday morning.
Speaking on behalf of the physicians of Monroe County was Dr. Sage Smith.
“I have here a petition with the names of all the doctors in Monroe County opposing the landfill,” Smith said. MORE
