Officials issue heat wave alerts

With the heat index exceeding 100 degrees last weekend and Monday and Tuesday, local and state officials are urging citizens to avoid getting too hot to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Sales tax: Monroeville’s is up, county’s is down

Sales and use tax revenues are going in opposite directions for the City of Monroeville and the Monroe County Commission, according to reports provided by Revenue Discovery Systems (RDS).

County jobless rate hits 16.7%

Monroe County’s unemployment numbers for May were the sixth highest in the state along with Perry County.
Monroe and Perry counties had a rate of 16.7 percent, according to the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations. Wilcox County led the state with 23.9 percent unemployment. Lowndes County was second at 18 percent. Dallas County was third at 17.7 percent and Chambers County was 17.6 percent. MORE
Salary cuts for County Commission

In an effort to help the county cope with a 6 percent reduction in sales tax revenues, the Monroe County Commissioners have agreed to take a 10-percent reduction in their annual salaries.
District 2 Commissioner Tim McKenzie made the recommendation at Tuesday’s commission meeting in Monroeville. He recommended the commissioners agree to a 10-percent pay reduction until the economy improves.MORE
