Mixon resigns post again
Dennis Mixon tried to retire as superintendent of the Monroe County Public School System about a year ago and last Thursday night he presented a second letter of his retirement to the school board that the board reluctantly accepted.
Mixon, who began his career as a teacher 32 years ago in Monroe County, said he and his wife, Carol, who has 31 years of service in the school system, have been considering retirement for the last two years. MORE
 
Spring football begins
The Monroe County High School Tiger football team took the field Thursday for a Blue-White scrimmage game.
Co-Head Coach Nathan Black said the exhibition was successful because they achieved their one goal – improving up front.

Man pleads guilty to murder
Torrance Tmarcus Preyear, 19, of Monroeville pleaded guilty this week to charges stemming from an October 2006 murder at a Brantley Switch nightclub.
Earlier this week in Circuit Court, Preyear entered a guilty plea in connection with the crime, which took place on Oct. 28, 2006 at “The Switch” nightclub in the Brantley Switch community in west Conecuh County. MORE
 
City sues Maughon over six trees
A local business owner is being sued by the City of Monroeville because the city alleges he has not complied with its landscaping ordinance and building codes and is operating the business without a license.
James Maughon of Goodway said he refuses to plant six trees around the ice-vending machine he owns in Monroeville because there were no trees on the lot when the machine was installed and the machine is actually a vending machine and therefore not subject to the city’s landscaping ordinance. MORE
